Kitchen Lighting Options

If your Thanksgiving feast is anything like ours, we’re guessing that you are going to be spending a lot of time in the kitchen in the weeks to come.  With that in mind, you may be thinking a bit more about kitchen remodeling projects and possible upgrades.  Before you get too far along in your mental room revisions, we’d like to take a few minutes to shed a little light on an often overlooked remodeling featuring – lighting! More often than not, lighting is one of the last parts of a project to be considered and one of the first elements to be rethought when it comes time to make budget cuts or revisions.  However, lighting is not only a practical consideration it is also a key design element.  It can set the stage for your space and a well lit room can showcase an excellent remodel. When thinking about light, one must consider more than just the fixtures.  A well lit room combines several different types of light including task lighting, or lighting designed to practically illuminate workspaces; ambient light, or light that helps to create a room’s mood; and accent lighting, or lighting that is put into place to add depth and dimension.  Because of this, a room can rarely be lit well from a single source.  Consider one of these unique sources to help set the scene for your lighting design:

  • Monorail Lighting: Monorail lighting puts a modern twist on traditional track lighting in that it allows remodelers to attach individual lights to one long, curving track.  However, unlike track lighting, monorail tracks are typically suspended from a single ceiling point and can often offer installation flexibility to fit your space.

  • Mid-Level Lighting: Mid-level lighting can help to add dimension and visual interest to your space.  Ready-made halogen fixtures can be attached to the bottom of cabinets and tucked into kitchen nooks.  Once installed, these lights can be angled up or down depending on the space, to create a mood-elevating ambience.

  • Pendant Lighting: As popular today as they were yesterdays, pendant lighting has stood the test of time for a reason.  Pendants lights allow homeowners to focus illumination on key workspaces.  With a variety of models available from the funky yet functional to the trendy and modern, there is truly a fixture for every home.  In addition, these practical and low-hanging fixtures make cleaning and maintenance a breeze!
