DIY – Don’t Try It Yourself

DIY – Don’t Try It Yourself

For the most part, we applaud the weekend home improvement warrior.  We admire your can-do attitude and oftentimes are genuinely impressed by customer projects.   However, there are some things that are just better left to the professionals.  Check out our list of the top “Don’t DIY” projects! Electrical Work: Unless you are tackling a simple task like  upgrading a fixture or replacing a  light switch, we always recommend calling in the professionals for projects involving electricity.  Not only can mistakes be deathly, but this is also one project area closely governed by codes – violations of which you want to avoid. Mold Removal: As with electrical work, there are degrees of mold project scope.  For example, if you have a small amount that can easily be bleached and hand-scrubbed away, by all means, go to it.  However, if you stumble upon a significant infestation, your best bet is to call for help.  Mold pros not only remove the problem, they also use chemicals designed to stop the mold spores from spreading – an important step to protect your home and your family’s health.  Roofing: Roofing seems simple enough on the surface – just use a staple gun and go to town.  However, there is actually much more to it than that.  Roofs have to hold up to the elements and, as such, need to be made waterproof and include flashing and vents.  Add in the additional risk factors of a steep slope and heady height and dangers abound.  Bottom line – if your roof has a slope steeper than a twenty-degree angle or if lack roofing know-how, leave your home’s exterior to the professionals. Plumbing Work: Water is one of those silly things that seems harmless but can actually cause a great deal of damage.  As such, we encourage homeowners to avoid interacting with or working on the home’s water supply lines or hot water heating system.  Also stay away from plumbing repairs or improvements that are concealed behind walls, floors, or ceilings where spills and leaks will be less obvious, allowing more time before cleanup to cause damage. Are you ready to call in the professionals?  Contact us today – if we can’t help you ourselves, we will happily point you in the right direction!
